Astronomie is een ander woord voor sterrenkunde. Het is een van de oudste en tegelijk een van de modernste wetenschappen.
Iemand die zich beroepshalve met sterrenkunde bezig houdt noemen we een sterrenkundige of een astronoom.
Nog maar kort geleden werd de sterrenkunde door de gemiddelde mens afgedaan als een zich nutteloos bezighouden met dingen, die met het leven van alledag niets te maken hebben. Het belang van deze wetenschap is nu, mede dankzij de ruimte vaart en het ruimte-onderzoek, doorgedrongen tot een groter publiek. De astronomie en aanverwante wetenschappen maken momenteel een explosieve groei door hetgeen onder meer blijkt uit de talrijke nieuwe grote telescopen die de laatste jaren in gebruik zijn genomen.
Hoe groot is de grootste ster? Om dat te weten, moeten we ze allemaal kennen. Helaas is dat niet zo. Alleen al in ons eigen sterrenstelsel (de Melkweg) bevinden zich zo’n 100 miljard sterren. En het heelal telt ruwweg eenzelfde aantal ‘Melkwegen’.
De maan is vast het meest bekeken hemellichaam aan de nachtelijke hemel. Vooral de volle maan spreekt tot onze verbeelding. Mensen worden romantisch en de weerwolven komen tevoorschijn. Wat weet jij allemaal over de maan?
Als je op een wolkenloze nacht naar de hemel kijkt zie je allemaal lichtpuntjes. De meeste van deze puntjes zijn sterren. Ook de zon is een ster, en wel de dichtstbijzijnde ster vanaf de aarde. Hoeveel sterren zijn er in het heelal?

Tot augustus waren er negen planeten in ons zonnestelsel. Toen heeft de wereldorganisatie voor sterrenkundigen (de Internationale Astronomische Unie) officieel besloten dat de kleinste planeet Pluto geen planeet meer is. Pluto is 'gedegradeerd' tot de nieuwe categorie: dwergplaneet. Er zijn nu drie dwergplaneten (Ceres, Pluto en Eris), maar de kans is groot dat er de komende jaren nog veel meer ontdekt worden
Als u van plan bent een telescoop aan te schaffen zijn er een paar belangrijke aspecten waar u vooral op moet letten.
De vuistregel is: koop een telescoop met het grootste objectief (opening) dat u zich kunt permitteren. Het klinkt misschien vreemd maar de vergroting van een telescoop is niet eens zo belangrijk, maar wel de kwaliteit van het brandpunt, wat onder andere gevormd wordt door het objectief. De vergroting is altijd wel te veranderen door een ander oculair maar de enige factor die niet te veranderen is, is het objectief en dient bij aanschaf dus goed te worden overwogen. Wat u aan moet aanschaffen is een moeilijk advies. Iedereen verschilt van smaak en ervaart gebruiksvriendelijkheid en kwaliteit anders. Als u een beperkt budget heeft, kunt u in het begin kiezen voor een spiegelkijker met een spiegel van 100 mm doorsnede, als u over een groter budget beschikt kunt u kiezen voor 200 mm of meer. Ook een 60- of 75 mm lenzenkijker van goede kwaliteit (niet uit de speelgoedwinkel) kan een verstandige keuze zijn voor een beginner.
